October harvests from our backyard garden in Amstelveen

Urban Gardener's Journal - November 2024 tips

Dear Growers,

November is here, after a lovely October allowing for late transplants and lush green colours in our gardens. We hope your garden is full of winter vegetables, as we share final sowing and transplanting tips.

Ensure you have fleece covers ready for cold temperatures and (stake) support systems in case of high wind.

1. What to Sow / Transplant

For outdoors / indoors - last sowings & transplants!

  • Transplant Garlic cloves: You can still transplant garlic cloves, preferably by the end of this month, allowing them to establish roots before winter. Here is our video with tips on how to plant Garlic.

  • Perfect time to sow Broad Beans during this week, to transplant end of month / early December. Sowing this year will give them a head start, allowing them to establish before winter and providing an early crop in spring. It also helps with reducing pests such as black flies before summer arrives. Alternatively, you can sow them in January to transplant in February, which will crop later

  • Given warmer temperatures, for indoors you can still try to sow Winter Purslane and Corn Salad as well as some Mustard Greens - asap

  • Ornamental onions and other flower bulbs to transplant now, and bring pollinators and beneficial insects / predators early in your garden next season

  • For winter months, it is always good to go back to basics and grow Cress and microgreens indoors for soups, salads, and sandwiches

2. What seeds to get ready for December?

  • No new sowings / transplants in December

3. Jobs to be Done

  • Harvest and clear out your veggies: You might still have some summer vegetables given warmer October. To support ripening, regularly harvest fruits when they are ready. Once cleared, you can either transplant final sowings or add compost if staying empty during winter

  • Maintain your soil with compost: Autumn to Winter is a perfect time to maintain your soil in your garden beds. Adding 2-3cm compost to empty spots and underneath your summer veggies before transplanting the overwintering vegetables is a great way to introduce nutrition to your soil naturally. Check out our post here for tips on how to apply compost in your beds.

  • De-weeding: Regularly check and remove weeds to proactively manage your beds

4. Harvests & Seasonal Chef tips

  • Green tomatoes and peppers: What to do with those green peppers that could not ripen? Check out our amazingly tasty inspirations for green tomatoes here and for peppers here.
