Species-specific cultivation instructions
Cultivation Tips:
- Spring Sowing: From March to June for a summer harvest.
- Summer Sowing: From May to July for harvesting from early autumn to winter.
- Seedbed Preparation: Refine and moisten the soil, sow thinly in rows 25 to 30 cm apart in a sunny spot. Cover seeds with a fine mixture of soil and sand.
- Moisture Management: Use a P17 type veil to maintain soil moisture and protect seedlings from drying out. Water gently with a fine spray.
- Thinning: Thin seedlings first to 2-3 cm apart when they have 4-5 leaves, and then to 7-8 cm apart.
Companion Planting:
- Radishes: Plant alongside radishes to reduce the need for thinning carrots and to deter red spiders.
- Alliums: Growing onions, garlic, or leeks nearby helps repel carrot flies.
Harvesting and Storage:
- Harvesting: Allow carrots to dry on the ground for 1-2 days, cut the leaves at the collar, and clean them without washing.
- Storage: Store dry carrots in sand in a cool cellar to preserve freshness and flavor.
Pest Management:
- Carrot Fly: The primary threat, whose larvae can damage roots. Preventive measures include companion planting with tansy and lavender and covering crops with insect-repellent veils.
- Root Aphids: Treat with nettle manure to combat these pests effectively.
